System Center Service Manager 2010 TechEd update!

Today Sean Christensen and Travis Wright held a very good session about “System Center Service Manager Implementation Tips and Tricks from the Field” covering several aspects like the virtualization of SCSM servers, licensing issues and some tools and enhancements which come available in SCSM resource kit next month. But the most important part of the session was the explanation of the roadmap and the announcement of SCSM 2010 R2.

In the next month the resource kit of SCSM will be released. In the resource kit an Exchange 2007/2010 connector comes available. This connector makes it possible to update, solve, close and so on via the email. The connector can be configured to “watch” an Exchange mailbox whereto service personnel or customers can sent their updates to. The connector picks up the email (with the ticket number in the subject) and will update the incident. The connector also handles attachments.

Today Sean Christensen and Travis Wright announced the roadmap for SCSM, in December 2010 SP1 will be released and will have 10 extra languages available for SCSM. Most languages like Scandinavian languages and the Dutch language comes available. In the first half of 2011 (around June), the beta of R2 will be released, at the end of the year 2011 the RTM will be released.

R2 will bring us:

  • Release Management
  • Service Request Fulfilment and Service Catalog
  • Virtual Machine Manager integration (stopping, starting, moving VMs, etc)
  • Reporting and analysis
  • Improve existing features:
  • Better SLA support
  • More customizable portals
  • Parallel execution of activities
  • Subscription infrastructure improvements
  • E-mail life cycle support (official support of the connector with Exchange)
  • and much more

Next month the source code of the SCSM Portal will be released. This way companies which deliver for instance Managed Services can make portals for different customers. The ability for using Service Manager for Managed Services needs some customization but it’s there, and the release of the source code will help companies which deliver Managed Service allot.
